The standard urological formula models the prostate as a prolate ellipsoid: Volume = Length × Width × Height × (π / 6), which simplifies to Volume = Length × Width × Height × 0.523 (or 0.52). All dimensions are entered in centimeters (cm) to yield volume directly in cubic centimeters (cc), where 1 cc = 1 mL.
What is a normal prostate volume by age?
In healthy young men (under 40), normal prostate volume ranges between 20 and 25 cc (about the size of a walnut). Due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate volume naturally increases with age: 40–50 years: ~25–30 cc; 50–60 years: ~30–40 cc; 60+ years: often 40–80+ cc.
