How to Calculate Pipe Volume
Pipes are essentially long, hollow cylinders. Calculating how much liquid a pipeline holds requires determining the circular internal cross-section and multiplying it along the total linear length of the run.

Let’s assume we will calculate the volume of a 6-meter length pipe with an inner diameter of 15 centimeters. The pipe is used to transport water. Let’s put these data into the calculator to find the volume of the water in the pipe and its mass.

Standard Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) vs Real Inside Diameter
In plumbing, nominal pipe designations (such as “3/4 inch” or “2 inch”) refer to standardized industry callouts rather than exact inner dimensions. For example:
- 1/2” Type L Copper: Inside Diameter = 0.545 inches
- 3/4” Schedule 40 PVC: Inside Diameter = 0.824 inches
- 2” Schedule 40 Steel: Inside Diameter = 2.067 inches
- 4” Schedule 40 PVC: Inside Diameter = 4.026 inches
