Understanding Surfboard Volume & Hydrodynamics
Before computer-aided design (CAD) and CNC milling machines revolutionized surfboard manufacturing, surfers bought boards strictly by three linear measurements (e.g., 6’2” × 18 1/2” × 2 3/8”). However, two boards with identical length, width, and center thickness can paddle and turn completely differently depending on how foam is foiled into the nose, tail, and rails.
The Volume Approximation Formula
Volume (Liters) ≈ Length_in × Width_in × Thickness_in × Foil_Coeff × 0.016387
Where:
- Length: Board length in total inches (e.g., 6’0” = 72 inches)
- Width: Center width in inches
- Thickness: Maximum deck thickness in inches
- Foil Coefficient:
- Performance Shortboard:
0.51 – 0.53 - All-Around Thruster / Hybrid:
0.54 – 0.56 - Fish / Groveler:
0.57 – 0.59 - Funboard / Mid-length:
0.60 – 0.63 - Longboard / Log:
0.64 – 0.68
- Performance Shortboard:
0.016387: Conversion factor from cubic inches to liters
Surfboard sizing – calculation example
Let’s find the ideal board volume for an intermediate surfer weighing 75 kg (165 lbs):
- Surfer body mass:
weight = 75 kg. - Skill level:
level = Intermediate (target GF: 0.39 - 0.45). - The calculation results are available for you:
recommended volume = 29.3 – 33.8 Liters. - Testing a board with dimensions:
6'0" × 19.75" × 2.5" (hybrid foil: 0.55)yieldsestimated volume = 32.1 L.
💡 In smaller or weaker surf, err toward the higher end of your volume range to paddle in earlier and carry speed over flat sections.
Recommended Volume by Surfer Weight & Skill
| Skill Level | Guild Factor (GF) | Recommended Liters for 70 kg (154 lb) | Recommended Liters for 85 kg (187 lb) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pro / Elite | 0.32 – 0.35 | 22.4 – 24.5 L | 27.2 – 29.8 L |
| Advanced | 0.35 – 0.38 | 24.5 – 26.6 L | 29.8 – 32.3 L |
| Intermediate | 0.39 – 0.45 | 27.3 – 31.5 L | 33.2 – 38.3 L |
| Novice / Weekend | 0.46 – 0.55 | 32.2 – 38.5 L | 39.1 – 46.8 L |
| Beginner | 0.60 – 0.85+ | 42.0 – 59.5+ L | 51.0 – 72.3+ L |
