Frequently Asked Questions

Expert answers to common calculations, unit conversions, and dimensional requirements.

How do you calculate the liquid volume in a partially filled horizontal cylinder tank?
For a horizontal cylinder with radius r, length L, and liquid depth d, the liquid volume equals the circular segment area multiplied by the length. When d <= r, the cross-sectional area of the liquid is A = r² · arccos((r - d)/r) - (r - d) · √(2rd - d²). The liquid volume is V = A · L. If depth exceeds the radius (d > r), you can subtract the empty top segment area from the total circular cross-section.
Why does a dipstick measurement not scale linearly in a horizontal tank?
Because a cylinder is round, the cross-sectional width changes continuously as the liquid rises. The middle of the tank is much wider than the top and bottom. Consequently, an inch of liquid near the center holds significantly more volume than an inch near the bottom or top.
What is the difference between total tank capacity and working volume?
Total capacity (gross volume) represents the physical internal geometry of the shell when filled 100% to the brim. Working volume (usable capacity) is typically 5% to 15% lower to account for thermal expansion, vapor headspaces, overflow safety valves, and drain pipe intake heights.
How many gallons are in a standard 275-gallon IBC tote or 55-gallon drum?
A standard 55-gallon drum holds approximately 55 US gallons (208 liters or 7.35 cubic feet). An Intermediate Bulk Container (IBC tote) typically holds 275 US gallons (1,041 liters or 36.76 cubic feet) or 330 US gallons (1,249 liters).
